There are 11 wineries along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail , several are a close drive (10-15 min) from New Buffalo. You can take an organized tour with Fruitful Vine Tours, (269.978.8777) or you can drive the trail on your own. We recommend the following two wineries (which are close proximity to each other)

Anchored by two major public beaches, the New Buffalo public beach, and Warren Dunes State park beach are both rated among Lake Michigan's best beaches. Warren Dunes with 1,950 acres lies on the northern end of Harbor Country in Sawyer. The many local township beaches in between provide several points of access to miles of sandy shores, unspoiled by commercial development, an ideal spot to plan your Michigan vacation. Experience our "singing sands," a unique phenomenon only to Lake Michigan beaches. We also have a sand sculptor who will come to you at the beach and teach you how to make bigger and better sand castles. New Buffalo has a large public beach adjacent to the harbor which has a refreshment stand-Jake's By the Beach, a small play area for children, restrooms, beach volleyball, an d a dune walkway/overlook. For a more sandy experience, drive 10 minutes north to see Warren Dunes Sand Dunes National Park . Warren Dunes has 1900 acres of sandy dunes against the lake, with the highest being about 250ft above sea level. Dune hikes and kite-flying are popular here. Built in 2007 by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, the casino is located at the intersection of Whittaker road (route 12-over the I-94 overpass) and Wilson Road. This casino has the only World Poker Tour Poker Room in the Midwest, along with 3000+ slots and several nice restaurants.

BLUE CHIP - 5 miles south of New Buffalo

Built in 2003, this casino is in Michigan City about 5 miles south of New Buffalo. Recent pesudo-entertainment acts have included: Edwin McCain, Jordan Knight (from NKOTB), Pat McGee, Tiffany, Gallagher, Pauly Shore, Skid Row, Firehouse, Sister Hazel, and of course Chippendales 2007.


Michigan has more public golf courses than any other state. Here are a few public golf courses in the area that you should really consider during your ESCAPE.

THE GOLF CLUB AT HARBOR SHORE - A Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course

This 18-hole, daily-fee Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course reflects the high standards of the world's leading design firm, Nicklaus Design. It runs over remarkably diverse terrain that challenges golfers even as it offers a spectacular setting in which to play. Three holes offer dramatic views of Lake Michigan. Eleven holes border the Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, and its wetlands. And four holes wind through rolling hills, ravines, and a hardwood forest. The result is a golf course unlike any other.

WHITTAKER WOODS - 18 Hole Course

Immerse yourself in nature at Whittaker Woods Golf Club! Whittaker Woods opened in July 1996 to raves and accolades, and remains a must-play today. The golf course measures more than 7,000 yards from the tips, rendering it a formidable challenge, yet plays under 5,000 yards from the front tees, ensuring enjoyment for all levels. With four tee placements, plentiful ponds and wetlands, and mature woodlands lining the fairways, the course will test your skills and please your senses.

The 18-hole "Pebblewood" course at the Pebblewood Country Club facility in Bridgman, Michigan features 5,421 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 68 . The course rating is 65.6 and it has a slope rating of 106. Pebblewood golf course opened in 1923. Ted Stama manages the course as the General Manager.

Harbor Country is relatively flat and easy to bike around and are nationally known for their extensive biking trails. Backroads Bikeway trails provide 20 self-guided tours on paved area roads, with lengths from 5 to 60 miles. The routes follow secondary roads over rushing streams and through picturesque rolling hills, patchwork farmland and beautiful meadows, parks and forests. You might also want to just bike around the area. From New Buffalo's Marquette Road through Lakeside's Lakeshore Drive, you'll wind along beautiful lakefront homes and beaches. Try renting bikes at

Dewey Cannon Trading Company (269-756-3361 -or-269-208-4255), located in Three Oaks, a town 6 miles from New Buffalo. Daily rentals for $30, weekend rentals for $75.

Outpost Sports (269-469-4210) rents Trek 21 speeds for $20 (half day) or $30 (full day).


Water sports are plentiful from the New Buffalo harbor and the water temperature in late June through early August is good for swimming. Jet skis are available to rent from the harbor. Try calling the Oselka Marina (269) 469-2600 for more information.

Galien River Kayak& Paddleboard  Rentals are available at the river from 11:00 - 5:00 EST (Michigan Time) 7 days a week from mid-May through early October, and at the beach from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September (weekends only in September). All equipment is available on site and reservations are not necessary or accepted show up any time you want and be on your way down the river! Outpost Sports: kayak rentals, lessons, and more (269-469-4210, 10am-6pm daily). They coordinate 2-hour kayaking trips down the Galien Passage to the New Buffalo city beach.

Third Coast Surf Shop to rent surfboards, paddleboards, boogie boards, skim boards, or sandboards from $7-$20/day. The surf shop offers Surfing 101 and 102 clinics for beginners.

Both off-shore and deep-lake fishing are popular options for pulling in lake fish. Fishing licenses are required, but most outfitters can provide day-licensure.

If charters aren't you're thing and you would like to fish on your own, the Galien River Fishing Platform, a New Buffalo City Park has almost 600 feet of frontage along the Galien River. There is year round fishing from two platforms on the north shore. You can access the area from the parking lot or from the boat parking lot and walk through the picnic area. Note: The 450 foot long South Breakwater is private property and not accessible. The first 300 feet of the 1000 foot long North Breakwater is constructed of rubble mound and is extremely hazardous and not accessible. Just a reminder: 2012 Michigan Fishing Licenses now required .
