Saying goodbye to summer isn’t always easy. However, guests of Bluefish Vacation Rentals may find a relaxing retreat among the Michigan fall colors. Usually, from mid-September to the first few weeks of October, the trees become a beautiful landscape of changing colors. If you’re visiting from out of town, finding the best places to witness this display may pose somewhat of a challenge. So, in this post, we’ll share some of our favorite scenic routes and destinations to see the fall foliage in our Lake Michigan communities.
The West Michigan Pike: A Colorful Corridor
Consisting of several scenic roads, the West Michigan Pike goes from the Indiana border to Mackinaw City. Along the way, several noteworthy Harbor Country towns are embedded amid a sea of fall colors. Iconic beach communities like St. Joseph and New Buffalo are relatively accessible from your vacation home. Also, if you’d like to venture further, towns like South Haven, Bangor, Berrien Springs, and Niles offer picturesque views and fun things to do. New Buffalo
With its idyllic harbor, renowned beaches, and quaint downtown, New Buffalo is an excellent place to start your West Michigan fall color tour. The best part is you can take a brisk stroll along the sidewalk, rent a bike, or stay in your car. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, head to Third Coast Paddling or New Buffalo Sailing Excursions for views from the Galien River or Lake Michigan.
St. Joseph
St. Joseph is a walkable little city with several parks, trails, and vantage points to explore. On Lakeshore Drive, you’ll find the Kiesel Overlook at Lookout Park, and further north along Lake Boulevard, you can visit Lake Bluff Park, all offering scenic views of Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River. While you’re in St. Joseph, go downtown and grab some coffee or a bite to eat to bring with you as you browse the art galleries, boutiques, and other shops.
Warren Woods State Park
If you’re looking for a place to hike, picnic, or simply immerse yourself in nature, Warren Woods State Park between Union Pier and Three Oaks should be on your radar. This 311-acre nature preserve boasts sizable stands of maple and beech trees, ideally situated along the Gailen River. A mile-long trail traverses a quiet section of the park, allowing you to find tranquility beneath the canopy of color.
Michigan Maritime Museum Cruise
A Michigan Maritime Museum cruise is worth considering if you find yourself near South Haven. These on-water tours serve as both an exhibit and a unique way to enjoy the fall colors from atop Lake Michigan. Each vessel offers a distinct experience, giving passengers another perspective, full of elegant lighthouses and gorgeous shorelines.
