Your Southwest Michigan Guide to Dog-Friendly Vacations

The dog days of summer are upon us, and that means there’s no better time to plan a getaway with your pooch. But where to go? It’s hard to do better than a dog-friendly beach vacation along the coast of Michigan and Indiana. Just over an hour’s drive from Chicago, this is the spot for both humans and their best friends to find a multitude of fun places to experience together, including dog-friendly beaches, parks, and restaurants, plus Bluefish’s own dog-friendly vacation homes and cottages, many of which lead you right to the water. 

Lake Michigan Fun: A Beach for Every Dog

It would not be a trip to the Lake Michigan Coast without time at the beach. In Porter, Indiana, explore epic sand dunes and a beautiful nature center at the Indiana Dunes National Park. Here, dogs are permitted on all beaches, except the West Beach swimming area. Note that pets must be leashed at all times while in the park and while swimming. 

In Stevensville, pack up your pooch and head to Grand Mere State Park. This park also allows leashed dogs in the swimming area and beach, plus you’ll find an all-terrain, one-mile hike with the payoff of a secluded stretch of the dunes along Lake Michigan.

At the popular Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph (also known as St. Joe’s to the locals), while dogs are not allowed on the sand or in the water, they can play inside the park. You and your pup can enjoy great walks on the paved sidewalks and pier, offering a stunning view of Lake Michigan and the area’s lighthouses.

Our Favorite Dog-Friendly Parks 

On the border of Indiana and Michigan, Michigan City’s Friendship Botanic Gardens invites leashed dogs and their owners to explore the many garden and wooded walking trails around Trail Creek. At Warren Woods State Park in Three Oaks, minutes from Warren Dunes State Park, discover a 311-acre nature preserve, where you’ll definitely want to walk with your favorite friend on a scenic, one-mile trail across the river. We also like Momany Park Family Park, located in Coloma, where dogs can bound around off-leash within a fully fenced dog park.

It’s possible to dine out with Fido every day of your vacation in Harbor Country, thanks to the area’s great selection of dog-friendly restaurants. Start at Barndogg’s for a seat on the dog-friendly patio. A popular spot for canine companions, this rustic lounge and bar serves up everything from coffee to cocktails in the heart of Union Pier. 

There’s also Peat’s Original Cider in Stevensville, a retro bowling alley where family-friendly activities and a selection of made-in-Michigan hard and non-alcoholic ciders are the draw. Another perk: dogs are welcome to hang with their owners—and vice versa—on the patio. 

Craving a refreshing pint? Head to Watermark Brewing Company, a dog-friendly microbrewery in Stevensville that features a sprawling beer garden, ample seating, and fire pits, plus a rotating selection of local food trucks. If you happen to be dog-free, definitely visit The Depths Society Golf, located under the brewery and featuring three Trackman-powered simulator bays. 

For a dog-friendly winery, Hickory Creek Winery in Buchanan welcomes leashed pets and offers water bowls to keep your doggie hydrated. Stop at the Blueberry Store for their famous blueberry dog treats, plus snacks for you, including locally sourced charcuterie plates with cow’s milk cheese and rosé-infused salami.
