When we made our Bluefish Vacation Rentals content calendars late last year, cross-country skiing seemed like a good topic to close out winter. However, Mother Nature sent us a friendly reminder that predicting the weather can sometimes be a shot in the dark. Still, we’re not ones to shy away from a challenge, so instead, we’ve rounded up the best spots for classic winter hiking when the weather is mild on our stretch of the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The Pros of Winter Hiking
What are some of the biggest upsides to winter hiking on these trails right now? You don’t need snow to hike these specific trails, you don’t need skis or snowshoes, and the trails don’t need to be groomed to make the most of them. Not only can you get out and enjoy nature, but you can go to more locations than cross-country skiing or snowshoeing would allow. Because you won’t have to transport any gear, you can easily go from place to place. Another advantage is that many of the best winter hiking trails are excellent for spring, summer, and fall, so when you return during the warmer seasons, you’ll already know where to go!
One last thing we can’t stress enough is that Lake Michigan ice is never safe to travel across, so don’t risk it.
Riverview Park
St. Joseph’s Riverview Park is a relatively small yet scenic public space along Michigan’s third longest waterway, the St. Joseph River. It’s an excellent place to enjoy winter hiking and some fresh air when the weather is mild. You don’t have to worry about being an advanced hiker here! The flat and accessible wooded trail is perfect for groups with young or senior members.
Jean Klock Park
Another quaint city park is Jean Klock Park along the Benton Harbor shoreline, with beautiful views of Lake Michigan and an observation tower. The city’s thriving art district offers various cafes, restaurants, and pubs to visit after your stroll. You can also access the Harbor Shores Nature & Fitness Trail from Jean Klock Park.
Mt. Tabor Trails
Boasting just over 3.5 miles of trails traversing forests and vineyards, the Mt. Tabor Trails connect Round Barn Estate in Baroda and Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant in Buchanan, allowing visitors to enjoy local flavors while surrounding themselves in nature. Grab a to-go beverage and enjoy the scenery on this immersive hike on your way to lunch or a local event.
Grand Mere State Park
With nearly 1,000 acres and a secluded atmosphere, Grand Mere State Park by Stevensville has just under four miles of winter hiking trails for those seeking peace and quiet. This natural area is particularly important to the local ecosystem, and its pristine dunes were named a National Natural Landmark in 1976. The various lakes, ponds, and marshes are home to a diverse wildlife population, so bring a camera and document your self-guided wilderness tour.
Warren Dunes State Park
A favorite of locals and visitors alike, Warren Dunes State Park outside of Sawyer is one of Michigan’s most popular state properties, and for a good reason. Three miles of shoreline, six miles of hiking trails, and a dune formation that peaks at 260 feet are just a few of the features you can enjoy at Warren Dunes.
